As easy as 5-4-3-2-1!
Have you ever felt overwhelmed about packing for a trip? Have you had this need to be prepared for absolutely everything and therefore overpack, lugging your overstuffed suitcase all around and barely using half of what you packed during your vacation? Well, you are not alone. I can totally relate! As a recovering overpacker, I can tell you that it is possible to travel light with a carry-on only with this easy-to-follow method that will make packing a breeze.
I recently discovered the life-altering “54321 packing method” by fashion blogger Geneva Vanderzeil of Collective Gen, which makes your travel wardrobe simple, adaptable, and streamlined. This no-fuss formula outlines exactly how much clothing to pack, with items you actually need - no more, no less!
Here is the breakdown:
• 5 Tops
• 4 Bottoms
• 3 Dresses + 3 pairs of shoes
• 2 Handbags - One large tote(doubles as personal item in flight)/One small bag + 2 swimsuits
• 1 hat + 1 belt +1 pair of sunglasses (accessories)
Underwear/Jewelry/Socks - no limit. Feel free to take as many as you need.
The beauty of this method is that it is easy to adapt to your needs by changing the items depending on the weather at your destination or your personal style preferences. If you stick to a color palette and choose pieces with different silhouettes (e.g. bottoms: 1 pair of jeans/ 1 pair of shorts/ 2 skirts), you can mix and match these items effortlessly to make amazing outfits and still have variety.
Our family of four recently took a 10-day trip to Spain implementing this method. We traveled with carry-ons only, and it was perfect! Yes, we had to do laundry (laundry sheets are amazing - Highly recommend) but that was a small price to pay to travel in comfort.
Give this genius method a try on your next trip, and travel in style with just a carry-on!
A few tricks to make this work: Always choose comfort. Pick wearable shoes that go with everything you have packed. Skip heels. Your feet will thank you later! Choose tops that work well with all the bottoms. Stick with a color scheme.
